Scenery Hill, PA Ceilidh’s Quest, a Double Edge Press title by Gail MacMillan, has won the DWAA’s (Dog Writer’s Association of America) prestigious Maxwell Award for works offered in 2007.

The DWAA has been around since 1935 and was born in the Westminster Kennel Club’s meeting room. Its writing competition is world famous and receives thousands of entries each year. MacMillan had the honor of having the Maxwell Award bestowed upon her twice before for previous works. Her 2007 win made her the recipient of her third Medal. The winners were announced at the February 10, 2008, awards banquet held at the Affinia Manhattan Hotel, NYC, NY.

Ceilidh’s Quest is a non-fiction book based on the writer’s dog, a Duck Trolling Retriever which Is a breed developed in Nova Scotia. It is MacMillan’s fourteenth published book. She is a New Brunswick, Canada author and has won numerous awards for her writing, including the North Shore Writers Literary Competition (Vancouver, BC) in 2006 for her essay Promise Pending which was later aired nationally on CBC Radio. Her short story A Chance to Care received honorary mention in the Christian Writers Literary Contest (Edmonton, Alberta). One judge described her writing as reminiscent of “Where the Red Fern Grows” and “Old Yeller”. Her most previous Maxwell Award was for her dog book Biography of a Beagle which won Best in the Fiction Category at the DWAA in New York in 2002.

Her work has appeared in Outdoor Canada, Saltscapes, Eastern Woods and Waters, Gun Dog, Dogs in Canada, Dog World, Dog Fancy, Camping Canada, Canadian Yachting, Seaports and the Shipping World, Dogs USA, Reader’s Digest Travel Books, The Retriever Journal, and Just Labs as well as a number of other publications.

She signed on with Double Edge Press, a Scenery Hill, PA, publishing company in 2006 and Ceilidh’s Quest was subsequently released in February 2007. Double Edge Press is releasing a second title by Gail MacMillan in May of this year, Caledonian Privateer, which is a romance novel.

Rebecca Melvin, CEO of Double Edge Press, comments on the DWAA win, “I’m not surprised. Gail’s work is beautiful, engrossing and really touches the heart. We were happy to add her work to our catalog and anticipate having many years of collaboration with her. It’s our first major award as a publisher, and we’re simply thrilled.”
